2 〔元の級〕 one's level at school before the present level [the previous school year].

●(学生が)原級にとどまる remain at the same level as the preceding year; stay back to repeat 《the first-year course》

・原級にとどめる keep 《a student》 back (to repeat a grade)

原級留め置き 〔留年〕 a staying behind another year (in the same grade).

●原級留め置きの生徒 a repeater.
